According to neuroscience studies, the adage that you should “be careful what you ask for” has more teeth to it than you might imagine. Your brain is very good at attending to whatever you direct it to. It’s kind of like when you go to buy a car and you think you’re the only person in the world who will have that shiny, bright purple VW Bug; then you drive it off the lot, and it seems every other car is just like yours. The Bugs were always out there, but it took a focusing event to get them onto your radar screen and noticed by you.

Thoughts, goals and ideas work the same way, and you can increase your brain’s considerable input on them if you learn to ask your brain nicely and deliberately to get involved. You can create your perfect world if you know what you’re looking for and–perhaps more importantly–if you pay attention to how your brain is fed.

This process works with negative thoughts, as well. As I teach in classes on emotional intelligence, crap will find you all day long, especially if you expect it. It will parachute into your office without an invitation and typically won’t leave when you want it to. You don’t have to go looking for it. It will find you. If you are dwelling on the bad stuff, it will find you more quickly and readily, and you won’t be primed for the things that will make you successful. Good things need to be noticed. We generally have to be more deliberate about the positive. Your brain will help you find innovative ways to do it. Just prime it, and it will be there for you.

Here are a few tips on how to make your thoughts work for you: (more…)

a fellow thinker’s thoughts

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

what if i did a free concert with some of my friends in the same vein as Woodstock some where random in the united states, would you spread the word and swing thru? ive been thinkin about using the power of u guys (my fans) to help me out with something epic and that would be pretty awesome. however i have to keep remindin myself its not 1969 and i would more than likely run into some issues.

thoughts?

do you think it would work? id probably have the majority of the acts be unsigned or signed indie bands/groups/artists to help bring back authenticity into the mainstream. (ALSO ELIMINATING EGOS, excluding Kanye because hes awesome and my brother and its my festival and i can do what i want and yall would wanna see him rock shit anyway so STEP OFF!  lol)

the purpose of me wanting to do this is because shit is weak and we need to remind people that whats on the radio or on itunes top list doesnt always determine what this generation is THINKING. music in the past decade has mostly been one big circus of fuckery.  i want to remind people of the reality of our youth, everything has been so peachy and glamorous looking to cover up how we all really feel. people call my music emo or depressing but those are people wearing masks afraid to align there minds with their souls.  that’s how all music was at some point, honest and raw. my music is the stuff most of you think about but wont say cause you dont like to talk about how you feel to people or your just a thinker like myself.  if someone thinks my music is a downer, then they didnt listen, and are avoiding self exploration (as my homie Sakiya has said).  of course im gonna sound suicidal when damn near everything else sounds like cheese balls.  guess what mainstream america, not a lot of kids are happy with life, they arnt rich and dont know what they wanna do with themselves.  music needs to cover all angles and rite now theres nothing happening.  we all have a big sheet being thrown over our eyes to distract us from whats really goin on in our minds and the world.  im bringin back raw, unedited, honest and uncomfortable thoughts of the youth.

TheThinkMovement.com by j. sakiya sandifer

i think because musicians get paid large sums of money for mediocrity, it distract us from using the power of music to connect with people. the more money you start to get for making shit you barely worked hard to make, the less you start to care about authenticity and using music to help people.  these are just my views, im some what of a hippie (officially comfirmed by the big homie Jay Stern) but understand, im trying to understand my purpose in life everyday like many other kids and im pretty damn for certain God gave me this talent to say some shit worth saying, like many others hes blessed with the gift of song.

well, i wasnt plannin on writing that much ha

peace and love and lemme know what you guys think about the festival

heres a quote from Max Yasgur, the the cool as hell dairy farmer who allowed Woodstock to take place on his property

I hear you are considering changing the zoning law to prevent the festival. I hear you don’t like the look of the kids who are working at the site. I hear you don’t like their lifestyle. I hear you don’t like they are against the war and that they say so very loudly. . . I don’t particularly like the looks of some of those kids either. I don’t particularly like their lifestyle, especially the drugs and free love. And I don’t like what some of them are saying about our government. However, if I know my American history, tens of thousands of Americans in uniform gave their lives in war after war just so those kids would have the freedom to do exactly what they are doing. That’s what this Country is all about and I am not going to let you throw them out of our Town just because you don’t like their dress or their hair or the way they live or what they believe. This is America and they are going to have their festival.

fellow thinker leandra williams’ answer…

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

TheThinkMovement.com by j. sakiya sandifer

Philosophers question.  They probe and by seeking a deeper meaning and understanding of themselves and their place in the world, by extension, they seek a deeper meaning and understanding of the world at large.  Philosophers offer society their unbridled curiosity and healthy skepticism in the form of inquiry and theory, housed within a dual disposition towards destruction and creation.

Educator and author Carter G. Woodson said, “When you control a man’s thinking, you do not have to worry about his actions.” It’s not possible to control the thinking of the person who consistently seeks understanding as well as ideological autonomy. By offering offering a different mental landscape, the philosopher subsequently offers a new vision.

“Think about it” is the philosopher’s modus operandi and as such, they’re virtually incapable of just going along with the status quo. To do so always represents a life of internal struggle and dissatisfaction.  By sharing their ideas of what they believe things really are and how they could be, they push society forward by endangering thought processes and systems that seek to create or maintain social standstill.

a fellow thinker’s great quote

Monday, March 1st, 2010

TheThinkMovement.com by j. sakiya sandifer

via www.Harrysworld.com.au

Today I met a lady who told me that I was wasting my time with social media.  She said that it was a waste of time and that we (society) don’t need it, especially twitter.

I took a few deep breaths and listened to her opinions then tried to explain that it is a very powerful tool that should be embraced and used in a positive way.  She continued to tell me we don’t need it as she expressed her hatred of twitter and other forms of social media.

I again took a few deep breaths to try to think of something prudent to say then out of nowhere a cool analogy came to me.  I said in a very respectful way, it’s true we don’t need social media just like how you don’t need to wear make up.  And depending on how you apply it, it can be either positive or negative.

I certainly did not come across as rude, but it did make her stop and think about the analogy.

a fellow thinker’s thoughts

By James Garvey

Is being opinionated a virtue or a vice? Is it a good trait in a philosopher?  I’m with Socrates in thinking that definitions really come at the end of an enquiry, not the beginning, so I don’t want to pin the notion down right at the start.  There are, though, two philosophical types.  One gets mentioned to prospective students in the promotional literature: philosophers are open-minded free enquirers, willing to question everything, resolute denouncers of dogmatism, pursuers of the truth, followers of arguments wherever they might lead — at this point you may wish to rise, stare into the middle distance, and allow the wind to blow back your hair.  This creature is mostly fictional. Maybe it’s just our way of luring easy targets to introductory classes. (more…)

I came across some great Ali quotes in the midst of some late night browsing last night.  Ali has been someone that I’ve admired for as long as I can remember.  At first I just sent them to a couple of friends who I knew could relate.  When I woke up this morning still thinking about them, I knew that I had to share them with all of my fellow thinkers.

a fellow thinker’s foresighted retrospection

TheThinkMovement.com by j. sakiya sandifer

by Leandra Williams via www.whatmyworldslike.com

Nothing lasts forever. While we know this, how much do we keep it mind as we move through our daily lives?

Recently, I’ve been contemplating the gross disintegration and looming demise of one of my most impactful relationships to date.  As useless as it often is, regret sometimes enters my mind and I wonder how much time was wasted trifling over the more frivolous details as opposed to enjoying and celebrating the great aspects of the relationship. But what if you could use regret “beforehand?”   (more…)

a fellow thinkers key to an inspired life

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

TheThinkMovement.com by j. sakiya sandifer

An inspired life will bring clarity to your thinking and thought process!  A disciplined thought will lead to disciplined action which delivers disciplined results.  I’ve been on this journey as a life long learner scrapping every piece of knowledge to explain the happenings of life.  How do we overcome hardship, adversity and challenging obstacles, what is the best and most resilient method? I wonder is it our attitude, skills or knowledge that builds effectiveness in the way we lead.  I strongly believe it is the seed we plant, the investments we make in nurturing, cultivating and plowing the dirt to ensure a healthy harvest of fruits that we can reap.  The road less traveled is uncommon, but worth it since it allows you to maximize your potential.
