what technology means to me

August 7th, 2008

TheThinkMovement.com

As I was getting caught up in the pure joy of my new iPod touch, this thought came to me…

In a world of what seems to have daily technological advancements, what do you think has been the greatest breakthrough that has impacted your life for the better and now you just can’t imagine life without it?  Equally, which breakthrough do you think is a total waste of time?

For me, the greatest has been the Internet and not just because of the unlimited access to porn I think it has totally leveled the playing field for everybody to present their ideas to the world.

It’s funny how I sometimes think that the Internet is also the greatest waste of time…uhmm…probably due to the unlimited access to porn!!!

I look forward to reading yours…

Why can’t I think of anything that has improved my life???

I have worked in the tech industry for 12 years and I often fantasize about leaving it all behind for a simplified life in a less-developed country.

The joy of the fantasy comes from the abandonment of all things that I use and depend on day-to-day.

I think the television has been a complete burden on society. It has the potential to be so much and yet we squandered the brilliance of the invention on reality shows.

I don’t know if it has improved my life or not, but I do love my iPhone.

i agree, the internet has had tremendous impact in so many ways…across so many fields
it is indeed a double edged sword though…you can waste away many hours engaging in mindless banter…
but its also an information highway…instant access to unlimited knowledge…
i, myself have done countless hours of research with the net
the main downfall i see with technology and the internet…is the loss of human touch…
using devices to replace human interaction is becoming very prevalent in the upcoming generation…
just think how many young people “cant” live without their cellphone attached to them

Definitely the internet for me. There is probably some other technological advancement that has done more to impact my life, but I can’t readily think of it. So, the internet it is. And I say the internet because it’s the information highway. Just so much information (and porn, lol) at your fingertips…at the click of a few buttons (and it sure helps to have some skill with the “Googling” technique). So much to learn, not enough time. I love it. How do people live without it?

I agree, Rich. Substituting face-to-face human interaction with communication via a virtual world isn’t exactly the best thing for humanity. While it might seem like an OK thing because we’re still being communicative even though we’re online, I do think that if you rely too heavily on the internet as your way of interacting with other people, it can hinder your ability to interact out in the real world. I will say though, that there’s a certain comfort you get knowing that you can exchange ideas with someone without them having to see your face, because what you bring to the table physically and other superficial things have a tendency to influence the way someone processes what you have to say, so it’s nice to not have the distraction there sometimes.

I have to agree that the internet is overwhelmingly the best invention E V E R for countless reasons, many of which you all named. :)

All technologies have their downfalls, and the internet isn’t an exception. ual predators on myspace, “cyber bullying” among teens (and college students! take a look at juciycampus.com – UTTERLY DISGUSTING!) and of course it’s potential of eliminating of human interaction.

Peep this def jam poetry session of this talking about just that:
“But sometimes you gotta say F@*% myspace cuz I need my space!”

And I gotta give a shout out to my best friend. My 80GB Zune!

The internet is just a tool… how you use it (or don’t use it) is completely up to you, and ultimately says something about you. I use it to keep a very deep catalogue of recipes (I love to cook) and to find unusual posts (like this one!) that entertain me in ways previously impossible. Long Live the Internet!
