a thought to ponder…

If you haven’t heard of the current green movement, then you must be from a galaxy far far away.

With countless politicians including it in their campaign platforms, numerous corporations making it an essential part of their marketing agendas, and various grass roots organizations constantly spouting about it, not being aware of it would be like not noticing the sun at high noon on a clear day while relaxing on the beach.

With all the information on the subject being abundantly available, I find it very interesting that when asking people what they know about it, most often they respond with general answers like…it’s about saving the earth from global warming, it’s about saving the whales, it means shopping at Whole Foods.

I’ve even had some people tell me that they don’t believe in going green at all because it’s just another marketing ploy attempting to guilt consumers into buying the new packaged version of an old product.

Though all those things might have some variables of truth to them, one cannot deny that thinking green will in the long term save you some long green money that is the thing that makes the world go around.

I remember watching a documentary last year about the auto companies in Detroit going green. One of the CEOs said that going green meant nothing to him until it was pointed out that millions of dollars would be saved just by putting grass on the roof of their manufacturing plant.

Now most of us don’t have situations like that to contend with, but regardless, all walks of life can save money by just thinking green.

For example, let’s just say that you went ahead and bit the bullet to purchase a green approved water bottle for $10. You will be amazed on how considerably cheaper it will be for you to fill up the $10 green approved water bottled with tap water instead of buying bottled water at an average cost of $1.50.

Now let’s do the math, if you were to refill your green approved water bottle twice a day for a week, the total cost would be $10, while purchasing two bottled waters for a week would cost you $21. Over the course of a year, you will have either paid a flat $10 or $1.09 for the exact same thing water!!!

And although I give much props to the marketing minds behind bottled water, I do think the run is coming to an end. More and more information is coming out on how most tap water is just as good or even better than what’s being bottled.

With that said, thinking green, if nothing else, is a sound financial decision. The bottled water scenario is just the tip of the iceberg in a long list of cost saving solutions.

I’m in complete agreeance and support of the economic benefits of “going green” but I think that touting economics as the supreme virtue only further perpetuates the reason why people aren’t thinking or don’t think of the larger and signficantly more important reasons.

We aren’t “saving the Earth”. This planet will and does take care of itself. All that we consider to be “problems” are inconveniences to our livelihood on this planet. Ninety-nine percent of all the species that ever inhabited Earth are extinct. The green movement is our chance to not join that number…for now at least. Any attempts made to live within the natural balance of this particular planet are truly to save US, not it.

Our lives are patterned on a system of sheer parasitism, exploiting the host for all it has to offer with no forethought: if the host dies, what happens to us?

The green movement is a capitalist attempt to correct some things, but it’s still mostly half-assed as truly living in sync with the Earth would require a lot more than metal water bottles, canvas shopping bags, organic food, and electric cars.

Think bigger. Than yourselves. Than your money. The planet is in disarray because we are in disarray. We are disconnected from nature and what’s natural, and, subsequently, from ourselves.

Having more money is always great. But there’s so much more and so much more to it. :)
