I've learned that I need a healthy balance of the two because sometimes friends will tell you what you want to hear rather than what you need to hear. I can count on my biological family to pretty much keep it real at all times. When it comes down to it though it takes time to find out who really has your back, related or not. But I think every family unit functions completely differently. Some families click, some don't. I can't imagine how many factors would affect it... My personal experience has taught me my family thinks they're supporting me when they're not... they want me to be financially secure skipping over being secure within myself, which has never really been addressed to me. They want me to live a comfortable life but I've kinda polarized against them and just went the personal fulfillment route. I honestly don't know if their support is genuine or obligatory (our culture is much more family-oriented that American culture), but all I know is I've never really felt as if I fit in my family. I definitely feel like if there were no cultural obligations some families would disperse, but there is a certain something that you feel towards people that you grow up with or that raise you.
