Substituting face-to-face human interaction with communication via a virtual world isn't exactly the best thing for humanity. While it might seem like an OK thing because we're still being communicative even though we're online, I do think that if you rely too heavily on the internet as your way of interacting with other people, it can hinder your ability to interact out in the real world. I will say though, that there's a certain comfort you get knowing that you can exchange ideas with someone without them having to see your face, because what you bring to the table physically and other superficial things have a tendency to influence the way someone processes what you have to say, so it's nice to not have the distraction there sometimes.
